Andy, Survivor
The oncologist told me that cancer will effect the fertility in a large number of cases within the first year of people with my case or the same type that I had, the low sperm count, the cancer, the left testicle that is remaining today started to die off and it was substantially smaller than where it should have been. The right testicle was totally engulfed in a tumor and substantially larger than a normal testicle should be. So the oncologist told me that 66% or somewhere around there of men with my case, where they have low or no sperm count, in the first year will get their sperm count back. So there’s some hope. Out of the remaining 34%, in the second year, a large percentage of those patients will get their sperm count back. If, at the end of the second year, you don’t have your sperm count back to low, or some type of sperm count, chances are you may never get it back.

Well I was hoping for that 66%. That came and went. Then I was hoping for that 34% and that came and went. And so I am part of that small percentage that never got their sperm count back. The oncologist said there’s always hope, but I pretty much think this hope is over. What we decided to do was start looking into donor sperm and we still have the dreams of a family and we will have a family. Luckily I have a strong wife who was able while I was trying to mentally get better and deal with the fact that I’m a healthy male, mid 30s with no sperm count, my wife luckily is a healthy mid-30s with a strong personality who was able to take the bull by the horns and start researching what we needed to do in terms of sperm banks and buying sperm.
