Dr. Gosiengfiao, Pediatrician
So leukemia in children is very treatable. The most common type would be acute lymphoblastic leukemia and we treat that mainly with chemotherapy only and we have high success rates even with just that. And so the risk of fertility for children who have had ALL is pretty low, however in adults, they are treated differently because their success rates are much lower and so they use stronger chemotherapy regimens and they may even use bone marrow transplants as well. And so that is why there is some discrepancy in what oncologists say the risk would be for leukemia comparing children versus adults.
