Elana, Partner of a Survivor
"When Andy was diagnosed with testicular cancer, we had been trying to get pregnant for approximately 7-8 months and I went to my OB-GYN and I asked her if we could just get some testing done even though it hadn’t been quite a year since we’d been trying to get pregnant, I just kind of wanted to take the bull by the horns and make sure that nothing was wrong. So, everything with me tested OK and then we went and got Andy’s sperm analysis done and we came back with a result of pretty much a zero sperm count. We went directly to a urologist who specialized in fertility to take a look at Andy and a couple of days later he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Obviously my first concern was Andy.
You know, we had only been married a year and a half and it was quite a blow. I mean, we were young, although we found out with testicular cancer that he was on the high end in terms of age range to have testicular cancer, but my first concern was him. My second concern was obviously our fertility because given that it was testicular cancer, I also knew that we had to be proactive in making him healthy and also in trying to figure out how we would be able to move forward after he was healthy to have a child. So, I kind of had to do two bits of research at one time, trying to figure out how to take care of him and then trying to figure out the fertility side of our life as well. "
