My partner is female. What are our fertility preservation options?
- What are the options if my partner is in the middle of or has completed treatment?
- What if we do nothing to preserve my partner's fertility before treatment?
- How can we optimize our fertility as a couple?
- Does undergoing cancer treatment guarantee my partner's infertility?
Having your partner go through cancer can be extremely scary and worrisome. Of course you are concerned primarily for her health and with providing emotional support. But as her partner, you may also be concerned about your future as a couple and maintaining the goals you have set together. One concern that may be on your mind is fertility preservation and her reproductive ability after she has completed cancer treatment.
Emergency IVF, ovarian tissue cryopreservation, and ovarian suppression are all options that may be available to your partner. Her doctor will be able to determine which option or options are most appropriate based on her type of cancer, treatment regimen, and your wishes as a couple.
Emergency IVF is the most established of the three procedures. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is still experimental and is currently being studied and performed by members of the Oncofertility Consortium. The effectiveness of ovarian suppression is fairly controversial.
